Biological Principles I Review

Chapters 2 & 3 review most* of the material covered in Biological Principles I, and it is expected that you have retained a working knowledge of those topics. If not, you need to refresh your memory. The topics that you will most definitely need to master are:

  • Organic Compounds (pp. 42-56).
    • Especially the sections on carbohydrates (p. 43) and ATP (pp. 55-56). These come up when discussing muscle physiology.
  • The Plasma Membrane: Structure (pp. 63-67).
    • Membrane junctions (pp. 66-67) are less important. We’ll pick those up along the way.
    • Download and print Extra Help: Plasma Membrane.
      • You should know all of the answers to those questions like the back of your hand.
  • The Plasma Membrane: Functions (pp 68-77).
    • The topic of membrane transport forms the basis for how muscle and nervous tissues function, and this will be the part of the course that separates the “men” from the “boys,” if you’ll excuse the sexist expression.
    • Concentrate on simple (passive) diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active transport, and vesicular transport.
    • Filtration doesn’t really come up until A&P2 and technically isn’t a form of membrane transport.
    • In terms of vesicular transport, only worry about endocytosis and exocytosis. We won’t discuss clathrin at all.
  • Cell-Environment Interactions (pp. 79-81).
    • Make sure you know what a receptor is, what is meant by a ligand, and what the general function of a receptor is (i.e., why is it important for the cell?).
    • G proteins aren’t covered until A&P2.
    • You can also skip the section on electrical signaling; we’ll get to that later in the semester.

*Note: Cellular respiration is NOT covered in Ch. 3, but rather in Ch. 24 (Nutrition, Metabolism and Body Temperature Regulation). This won't be important until we discuss muscle metabolism later in the semester.

Important figures, just for review:

  • Marieb Fig. 3.2 (p. 63)
  • Marieb Table 3.3 (pp. 94-95)
  • Marieb Fig. 3.3 (p. 65)
  • Marieb Fig. 3.4 (p. 66)
  • Marieb Fig. 3.7 (p. 69)

End-of-Chapter Activities

  • Recommended Chapter 2 Review Questions (pp. 59-60)

    • Short answer essay: Questions #23, 24, 29-33, 35
    • Critical Thinking & Clinical Applications: Questions #2, 5
  • Recommended Chapter 3 Review Questions (pp. 111-112)

    • Critical Thinking/Clinical Applications: Questions #1, 8
  • Recommended Lab Manual Questions (Review Sheet 4, pp. 49-52): Questions #1-4, 8-13

MasteringA&P has a variety of Chapter Quizzes that you can also try. I don’t have the ability to customize these, so you will find questions related to material that you’re not responsible for. Feel free to guess or skip those questions. Again, I don’t count those towards your grade.
